No Outsiders

At Gainsborough Primary and Nursery School one of our aims is to support pupils to develop the characteristics and personal qualities which will help to prepare them for life in the 21st Century.

We want to deliver a curriculum that enables our children to understand and respect the benefits that exist in a society where difference and diversity are celebrated. We teach the children to respect and accept diversity and difference, to feel that they are never an outsider and to welcome all who they meet. The principle of equality is that everyone is treated fairly without suffering discrimination or prejudice.

No Outsiders is a proactive approach which encourages children to value and celebrate each other. The teaching of ‘No Outsiders’ supports our school rules of ‘Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Safe’. It challenges stereotypes and the use of derogatory language in lessons and around school.

Underpinning our teaching is the Equality Act 2010 which makes it against the law to discriminate against an individual because of a range of protected characteristics.

The ‘No Outsiders’ approach uses a range of 35 picture books through which all pupils from Nursery to Year 6 will be taught about diversity.

Themes covered include:

  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Gender & Gender identity
  • Age
  • Disability
  • Sexual orientation
  • Pregnancy or maternity
  • Marriage or civil partnership

In addition to using the picture books, each day the children are given the opportunity to discuss a thought-provoking image or current news story which is also discussed in lessons and assemblies throughout the week. We use current news stories and images as a prompt for discussions in order to challenge some of the messages being presented to our children about the world today.

‘No Outsiders’, alongside other elements of our SRE (Sex and Relationships Education) and PSHE (Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education) curriculum aims to develop the ethos of the school into one where every member of the school community feels welcome.

Everyone is welcome at Gainsborough!
