Sport & Sport Funding

All children at Gainsborough have an average of  two PE sessions per week.  Physical Education incorporates games, gymnastics, and dance. In addition, Year 3 and Year 6 pupils are taught to swim by qualified swimming instructors at Crewe swimming pool.

The children are taught a wide range of skills to enable them to participate in team games.  They learn a range of sports, for example football, cricket, rounders, tennis, athletics, dance, rugby and netball.

We have specialist athletics teaching for year 2 to 6 with ‘On Your Marks’!  This enables all pupils to gain from very high quality teaching using specialist athletics equipment.  The Gainsborough Athletics team won the final of the Cheshire and Warrington Indoor Athletics at The Northgate Arena in Chester in 2013, 2015 and 2016.

Go Team Gainsborough, Go!

We strive to give as many children as possible the opportunity to represent the school in some way.  Whilst we are keen to do well in competitions and to provide children with memories, pride and self-esteem, we also hold an annual ‘Sports Day’ in which all children have an opportunity for competition, success and a great deal of fun.

Our aim is to encourage all pupils to adopt a healthier lifestyle and to understand sport provides a source of fun and satisfaction for all.

PE and Sport Premium for Primary Schools Statement

Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6. Schools with 16 or fewer eligible pupils receive £500 per pupil. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £8,000 and an additional payment of £5 per pupil. Schools must spend the funding to improve the quality of the PE and sport activities to offer their pupils, but are free to choose the best way of using the money.
Examples of how to use the funding:

  • hire specialist PE teachers
  • hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
  • provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport
  • support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
  • run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • run sports activities with other schools.
