PE and Sports

PE

At Gainsborough we want every child to be healthy and fit and have the opportunity to participate in sport and PE so that they are physically confident. This is achieved through positive teaching and learning experiences at all levels and for all children.

PE and sport is led by the PE subject leader and supported by all members of staff.

Our PE lessons cover all areas of the National curriculum, including; games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor activities and athletics.

Events/competitions

In swimming, we take part in the Crewe annual swimming gala, in which we are becoming more successful in each year.

This year, we have also participated in several other sporting competitions. These include; basketball, dodgeball, high 5 netball, cricket, football, rounders, athletics and cross country. We are hoping to further expand this by entering into local tag rubgy tournaments and gymnastic compeititons.

Inclusive sports - here at Gainsborough we view sport as sport for all. We believe that everybody should have the opportunity to take part in sport. Inclusive sports allows our special educational needs children to take part in a variety of different activities at South Cheshire College. We take part in this three times a year.

Dance

This year we continued to develop dance at Gainsborough. Once again, we held a 'dance week' and all children throughout the school took part in a dance workshop. Some year groups danced to hip hop, whilst others danced to Brazilian and music from other countries. At the end of their dance workshop our children performed for their parents to showcase their new skills and moves!

Sportscape

Here at Gainsborough, we are fortunate to have experienced qualified coaches coming in and working alongside our teachers. Sportscape offer great teaching and learning opportunities for our children, whilst providing extra CPD for our staff. The children have enjoyed taking part in outdoor adventures, and some year groups have been fortunate to learn new team games such as tri-golf and boxing. Sportscape also offer a wide range of after school clubs, which our children throughly enjoy.

Total gymnastics

This year we have continued to work alongside Total Gymnastics; this is a gymnastic company owned by our very own England Olympic champion Beth Tweddle. Beth came in and visited our school, alongside some of our children; with the aim to increase participation and enjoyment in gym, amongst both boys and girls. Here our children have had the opportunity to learn new skills and sequences, and perform amongst one another.

Pupil Voice/ Match Reports

It is important that our children not only enjoy the sports that they are taking part in, but they have the opportunity to reflect and share their experiences with everybody else in the school. We encourage our children to share their successes and to be proud of what they have achieved.

In school, we allow our children to prepare match reports which they read out in Cup Winners assembly, and we also post all successes on our weekly newsletter and website. We also ensure that our children enjoy their PE lessons at school, by completing pupil voice monitoring sheets and conducting staff questionnaires.

Keeping physically fit!

We believe it is vitally important that our children have the best opportunity to be physically active - therefore we ensure that equipment in school is accessible for all. At break time, we have purchased new basketball nets, play equipment and table tennis stands, which fit nicely alongside our ball cage, climbing frames and tyre park. Our children thoroughly enjoy playing with these!

Change 4 life champions

At Gainsborough, we are part of the Crewe and Nantwich school sport partnership. As part of this, we took part in a change 4 life champions training day - here we took some of our children to learn new games and activites which they could then relay back to children at school. Our children came up with the name, 'Ready, set, Gainsborough!'.

Golden mile/ Wake up shake up

We recognise the importance of staying healthy both physically and mentally - we therefore encourage our children and staff to go out and complete the golden mile around the playground. We have also introduced and encourage our classes to complete the 'wake up, shake up' activity at some point during the school day. This is a short dance, to enjoyable music, that the children love!

Healthy Living week/Circuits

Once again, we have hosted a healthy living week - here children have the opportunity to learn all about food and the importance of eating their 5 a day! Our children have enjoyed making a variety of different foods, which they have then sat down and enjoyed eating! We also took this as an opportunity to develop our writing. In Year 5, the children wrote a 'Healthy Living Report' - which was shared during a school assembly.

Healthy eating and healthy living is of vital importance, we therefore host assemblies through out the school year to ensure our children are making the right choices! We also have a healthy eating trolly, controlled by our 'Health Busters' - which provides our children with fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks!

During healthy living week, we held a 30 minute circuit challenge - here our children took part in a circuit comprising of 10 stations (press ups, ladders, sprints etc). They spent 3 minutes on each station and rotated around - they loved it!
